Where to Put Fire Extinguishers in Your Home
A fire extinguisher in the wrong place is almost as useless as no extinguisher at all. This room-by-room guide covers placement, type selection, and the minimum number you actually need for proper coverage.
The Golden Rule of Placement
Place fire extinguishers near exits, not near hazards. You should never have to reach past a fire to grab the extinguisher. The path to the extinguisher should also be the path out of the room.
NFPA 10 recommends a maximum travel distance of 75 feet to the nearest extinguisher for Class A hazards. In a typical home, that translates to one per floor at minimum, with extra units in the kitchen and garage.
Mounting height matters too: the top of the extinguisher should be no more than 5 feet above the floor (NFPA 10, 6.1.3.8), and the bottom at least 4 inches off the floor to prevent damage.

How Many Do You Need?
| Home Type | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1-bed apartment | 1 | 2 (kitchen + entry) |
| 2-3 bed single story | 2 | 3 (kitchen + garage + hallway) |
| 2-story house | 3 | 4-5 (kitchen + garage + each floor) |
| Home with EV or e-bikes | 3 | 4+ (add one near charging area) |
The ideal setup depends on your home's layout, but most experts recommend at least one per floor plus one in the kitchen and garage.
